Some History

While there is more diversity in the area these days, U Street in the 20th century was home to one of the largest African American communities and was a great place to experience Black culture.

Fittingly, jazz musician Duke Ellington was born in the U Street neighborhood, and in the 1960s U Street saw performers such as Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis performing at the local clubs.

U Street Neighborhood

These days, U Street DC is still one of the best areas to experience great music and a spirited nightlife. U Street has diverse food options ranging from Italian to Ethiopian, one of DC’s best live music venues at the 9:30 Club, and an excellent farmers market during the summer months. The neighborhood has transformed into an entertainment hub within DC, but it still preserves its roots in many ways.

Location

U Street DC is located in Northwest Washington DC and is bordered by Logan Circle to its south and Columbia Heights to its north.

Transportation

U Street is serviced by the U Street Station on the Metro. U Street is also accessible via the DC Circulator; this bus line costs $1 to ride and has stops throughout DC. For other transportation options, check out one of the bike or scooter renting options that are available.
