Some History
While there is more diversity in the area these days, U Street in the 20th century was home to one of the largest African American communities and was a great place to experience Black culture.
Fittingly, jazz musician Duke Ellington was born in the U Street neighborhood, and in the 1960s U Street saw performers such as Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis performing at the local clubs.
