Shaw DC is a neighborhood located in Northwest area of the District.

Shaw is a lively neighborhood with a great bar and dining scene, small coffee shops all around, all while still featuring much of its historical roots.

Shaw is home to many new luxury apartment buildings and condos that have really increase traffic into the area. Outside of these, Shaw has many Victorian rowhouses.

Some History

Shaw was known as Midcity up until the 1960’s. In the 1960’s, Shaw was home to many riots after the death of Martin Luther King Jr.

During that time, the neighborhood became rundown and suffered from economic hardship.

Over the years, Shaw has continued to develop and has benefited from projects targeted to help recover the neighborhood. Shaw has benefited greatly, and is now home to many new attractions that keeps the area buzzing.

Shaw Neighborhood

Shaw is home to primarily young professionals. The area continues to develop with the opening of new restaurants, shops and luxury apartment buildings attracting a new demographic than the area was previously used to. The neighborhood is conveniently located near U-Street corridor, a nearby district with a rich history in music and arts that is great to visit.

Location

Shaw is located in Northwest Washington, DC bordered by U Street Corridor to its north and Mount Vernon Square to its south.

 

Transportation

 

The Shaw neighborhood is serviced by the Shaw-Howard University station. This station serves the Shaw neighborhood through the Green Line and Yellow Line.

  • Howard TheatreSee a show at the historic Howard Theatre or at least go check out the Duke Ellington statue outside the Theatre.

  • Dinner at The Red Hen or the Dabney, two favorites of the area.

  • Blagden Alley for some history, murals, coffee shops and restaurants.
