Capitol Hill rises in the center of the District of Columbia and stretches east. As a center for the United States Congress, Capitol Hill DC features some of the oldest residential neighborhoods that house 35,000 residents in just under 2 square miles.

Largely residential neighborhoods composed of row houses from different stylistic periods. The 19th-century brick row houses bring an older charm to the city. 

Fun Fact
While serving as George Washington’s secretary of state in 1793, Thomas Jefferson named Capitol Hill. With such a strong association with the US government, Capitol Hill is a historic center with many landmarks and a character all its own.

Expect a mix of tourists, politicos, and young professionals. With historic government buildings and within walking distance to restaurants and nightlife, Capitol Hill makes for an attractive area to navigate as you soak up the history and take in the views.

Transportation

 

Bring your car or leverage the bus or Metro stations to easily navigate around DC. There are three Metro stops within walking distance:  

  • Capitol South — First Street between C and D Streets, SE
  • Federal Center, SW — Southwest corner of Third and D Streets, SW
  • Union Station — First Street, NW, and Massachusetts Avenue
