Anacostia DC

Anacostia is a neighborhood in Southeast, Washington DC. Anacostia encompasses the Anacostia Historic District that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Anacostia features a primarily African American Community with a rich history that today has and continues to be under development to bring new destinations for visitors.

Some History 

Anacostia is named after a tribe in the 1600’s that inhabited the land along the Anacostia River. Anacostia, once known as Uniontown, is one of DC’s oldest suburbs. Originally Anacostia was meant to be an affordable neighborhood for the working class of Washington, DC and still these days embodies many of those values.

Anacostia Neighborhood

Anacostia DC is a historic neighborhood that these days is home to many working-class African Americans. Anacostia preserves much of its culture through various attractions such as The Anacostia Museum and Cedar Hill, which was the home of Frederick Douglass. 

Location

Anacostia is located in Southeast, Washington DC and east of the Anacostia River. Downtown Anacostia can be found at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Good Hope Road.

 

Transportation

 

Anacostia is serviced by the Anacostia Metro Station and an increasing number of bikeshare stations. Anacostia station is on the green line of the Washington Metro and also serves as a station for many Metrobus routes.
